Metal Commodities has run in North Kingstown since 1971, when founder Kenneth Christiansen started processing copper and steel in his barn after a recession hit his home-building business. A fire destroyed his first commercial building three weeks after he moved in in 1991, and he rebuilt in a new building he designed. Today it is the only independently owned recycling facility in town, still family-owned, shipping metal to US and overseas markets. The yard buys aluminum, brass, copper, light and heavy iron, insulated wire, auto and steel-cased batteries, electric motors, transformers, radiators, rotors, and stainless steel. It refuses refrigerators and rims with tires, and transmissions must be drained. Dumpsters are available for cleanups, demolition, and construction.
