A five-generation family has run J. Solotken & Company in Indianapolis since 1914. The 140,000-square-foot yard buys copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel, insulated wire, zinc, lead, carbide, tool steel, and high-temperature nickel and cobalt alloys from manufacturers, contractors, retail sellers, dealers, and brokers. Lead purchases exclude batteries. Furnace-ready scrap is sold to mills, foundries, smelters, and ingot makers. Deliveries are accepted Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at several receiving docks, with indoor unloading in bad weather. Shipping runs 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Drivers check in at the warehouse receiving office and need identification plus safety apparel and footwear. The company supplies roll-off containers, picks up scrap, grades high-temperature alloys, and mutilates end-of-life items so they are no longer usable.

Many states restrict cash payment for scrap metal, especially copper and catalytic converters, and require a photo ID and a waiting period. Expect a check or electronic payment at some yards. Call ahead to confirm how a yard pays.
Bring a valid government photo ID. Many states also require a vehicle plate number and, for some items, proof of ownership. Separate metals by type before you go, since mixed loads are paid at the lowest grade.
Yards price scrap by the pound or ton, based on commodity markets such as COMEX copper, minus their processing costs. Prices change daily, so call two or three yards before selling a large load.
Get a real cash offer in about 2 minutes. Free towing, any condition, even if it doesn't run. No haggling, no phone calls.
