The Waste to Energy Facility in Spokane, located at 2900 S. Geiger Blvd., is an integral part of the city's solid waste system, focusing on recycling, waste reduction, and energy recovery. Operating daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on major holidays, the facility processes 800 tons of municipal solid waste per day, generating around 22 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 13,000 homes annually. Notably, the facility reduces solid waste volume by 90-70% by weight, with resulting ash used as alternative daily cover in a regional landfill. Visitors can tour the facility in person or virtually, with group tours available by reservation. The facility also accepts fire-damaged materials that are recognizable and ash-free if accompanied by an asbestos survey. Additionally, a new study from The City College of New York confirms the facility's role in reducing greenhouse gases and complementing recycling efforts, countering misconceptions about waste-to-energy technology.
