The New York City Department of Sanitation provides essential services for the proper disposal of harmful household products and chemicals. Residents can safely dispose of toxic items such as cleaning products, disinfectants, cosmetics, detergents, drain cleaners, and pest control products, which should not be poured down drains or toilets. Instead, these items should be dried out with absorbent materials and placed in the trash, with containers double-bagged and marked as "Danger - not for recycling." For other household chemicals, residents are encouraged to use up the product and recycle the empty containers. Additionally, the department offers SAFE Disposal Events for the safe disposal of household chemicals and leftover paint, including latex, non-latex, and spray paint. PaintCare, a nonprofit organization, facilitates the recycling of leftover paint at designated drop-off sites throughout the city, accepting house paint, primers, and stains in original containers. Residents can also request free pickup services for large volumes of leftover paint. Special care is required for skin lightening products containing mercury, which must be disposed of properly.
