Phoenix owns two strategically placed transfer stations, one in north Phoenix and one in South Phoenix. The transfer stations temporarily house all of the trash from Phoenix before hauling it to the State Route 85 Landfill in Buckeye. All recyclables in Phoenix are also sent to the transfer stations to be sorted by the adjoining Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), which sorts glass, paper, metal, cardboard, and plastic into separate bales. Green organics are sent to the 27th Avenue Compost Facility for processing into compost. The transfer stations accept appliances, tires, and other waste materials for a fee, with specific guidelines such as cutting boats and spas into fourths to avoid penalties, and removing valves from bulk propane and Freon containers. Certain wastes like regulated hazardous waste, PCBs, radioactive wastes, and infectious wastes are prohibited. Disposal fees are $55 per ton with a $40 minimum charge, payable in cash or credit card. Residents can also enroll in the Certified Green Organics Program for vegetation-only loads. Commercial customers need an Express Exit Disposal Permit Decal for each vehicle.
