Every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Conservation Corps of Long Beach takes e-waste at its Nieto Avenue headquarters: computers, monitors, printers, laptops, tablets, network equipment, cables, cell phones, televisions, microwaves, game consoles, and similar electronics. Batteries, household hazardous waste, used oil, paint, ink cartridges, and light bulbs are refused. Outside the Saturday hours, a self-serve recycling area stays open around the clock for aluminum cans, glass bottles, newspaper, and flattened cardboard boxes, posted with signs against illegal dumping and 24-hour surveillance. The site belongs to a nonprofit that has run job training, conservation, and education programs for young people since 1987, and recycling is one of its crew projects.
