Worley Brothers Scrap Iron & Metal runs a non-ferrous scale house at 1554 Thomas Street in Memphis, separate from the ferrous truck-scale yard at 1636 Thomas Street. Sellers bring copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, insulated wire, radiators, aluminum wheels, condensers, and aluminum cans. Payment is cash. Every sale requires a valid federal or state picture ID plus fingerprints. Trash, dirt, water, paper, or other debris mixed into a load is turned away. Oxygen tanks, propane tanks, railroad iron, paint cans, food cans, aerosol cans, mattress springs, shopping carts without a store letter, and government or utility property are refused. Some metals stay on hold 3 to 10 days before the voucher is paid. Weekdays run 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Saturday 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM, and Sunday is closed. The company also buys junk cars, towed in or picked up, and sells used auto parts.

Most scrap yards buy lead-acid car batteries by the pound or per battery. Auto parts stores usually take them free and may refund a core charge.
Tape the terminals of lithium and 9-volt batteries or bag each one separately. Loose lithium batteries can short and start fires in bins and trucks.
Alkaline batteries are legal to trash in most states, but rechargeable and lithium batteries are not. Recycling all of them is the safe choice.
