CMC Recycling opened its Birmingham yard in 2004 as a brand-new facility on 27th Avenue North, two miles off Highway 59 and Tallapoosa Street. It draws scrap from Birmingham and the surrounding area, up to 100 miles out. The site includes a Retail Express facility built for individual sellers, where staff help unload ferrous and non-ferrous metal and move customers through quickly. Sellers show a federal or state-issued ID, and copper above a set value must be paid by check by law. The yard buys copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, lead, and lead batteries. It refuses hazardous waste, PCB items, NiCad batteries, compressed gas cylinders, radioactive material, mercury, sealed containers, and liquids.
